Celeste Garcia is a senior at the University of Illinois at Chicago pursing a bachelor’s degree in biology. She is also a first generation student with an associate degree in biological sciences from Prairie State College.

Ms. Garcia heard about HACE through the involvement fest at UIC. She mentioned that the officers from HACE’s UIC chapter were very welcoming.

“Being a first generation student in Chicago can be overwhelming, I really value HACE’s events because they promote unity and offer opportunities to develop useful skills that can be applied to any major.”

She said that when she came to UIC, she didn’t really feel the Latina presence in STEM. It was only after she started to get more involved with HACE that she starting meeting other Latinas in STEM and resources within her field.

“What I like most about HACE is that they are always connecting students with Latino professionals who share the same passion in a field of study. That mentorship opportunity is essential for my professional development.”
